Project 1

Geometry & Form

In this project, we were given the tasked with choosing one ordering principle to work with. The were 6 principles to choose from, axis, symmetry, hierarchy, datum, rhythm and repitition. We then had to experiment the principles with the primary elements of points, lines and planes by making models. Finally, we had to make a final model following the same ordering principle choosen, but using 2 to 3 primary elements.

Ordering Principle: Symmetry

I chose symmetry because it was the one I was most familiar with, thus felt like i could be more creative with it while still following the rules of the principle.

Points

For points, I wanted to keep things simple. I stacked satays sticks in a simple pattern that was symmetrical on 4 sides. The stacking of the sticks with varying length create an interesting look for the model.

Lines

When I think of symmetrical structures, I think of twin towers, which was the main inspiration for this model. I cut modelling board to thin pieces and arranged them to create cubes and cuboids that intersect. The intersecting cuboids create the shape of two twin symmetrical towers

Planes

For this model, I wanted to that were different from the previous two, by making it symmetrical from left to right, as well as top to bottom. I experimented and came up with this futuristic style hexagon form.

Final Model: Planes and Lines

For the final model, I decided to base it off of my planes model which i thought was the one that had the most depth and looked the most interesting. The form and shape is very similair to the plane model with elements of lines implemented into it.

Tattoo Stamps

The tattoo stamps were based on the top, plan, section and side view of the final model. The shadows were abstract using hatching and darkening.

Reflection

This project was a nice practice for me to gage the standards of degree compared to foundation, which were much higher. I also learned that i need to work on my model making skills, to be more precise with my cuts and glue placing, to be able to create cleaner looking models.
